Miguel is a born architect. He fell in love with architecture at the age of four when his parents gave him Idema, a building game, and he recalls how in school he loved nothing so much as seeing the pieces of a design puzzle fall into place. As a student, he pursued architecture first at the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan and later at Canada's McGill University which awarded him a Master's degree. While disappointed at the technical bent of the design courses, Miguel knows the value of that training which lets him concentrate on what he most loves, the aesthetics of design.
Miguel admires the mastery of concrete and the clean lines of the work of Kenzo Tange. He laments the absence of cultural and geographic roots in International Architecture. Miguel feels he is swimming in "territorial waters" in Yucatan, and his use of local materials reflects those feelings.
Miguel works on every project personally loving the ordered chaos of each site. His energy is infectious and his workers - a closely knit team from the village of Teabo - clearly respect him.
